چهل درس زندگی از نهج البلاغه حضرت علی (ع)

Be cheerful!

البشاشة حبالة المودة.

خوشرویی دام دوستی است.

An open and pleasant countenance gets more friends.

 

Grant pardon [your adversary]

اذا قدرت علی عدوک فاجعل العفو عنه شکرا للقدرة علیه.

آنگاه که بر دشمنت دست یافتی، بخشیدن او را سپاس دست یافتن بر او ساز.

When you get an opportunity and power over your adversary forgive him in thankfulness to God for being able to overpower him.

 

 Have a high ambition

قدر الرجل علی قدر همته.

ارزش آدمی به میزان همت اوست.

The worth of a man is according to his courage and ambition.

 
Have foresight

الظفر بالحزم و الحزم بأجالة الرأی و الرأی بتحصین الأسرار.

پیروزی به دوراندیشی است و دوراندیشی به راز داری.

Success is the result of foresight; foresight depends upon deep thinking; and careful planning by guarding the secrets

Do more good in answer to the goodness

اذا حییت بتحیة فحی بأحسن منها.

چون بر تو درود فرستند، به بهتر از آن پاسخ ده.

If you are met with a greeting, give better greetings in return.

 

Be of a high moral

لا قرین کحسن الخلق.

هیچ همنشینی مانند اخلاق نیکو نیست.

No companion is like the goodness of moral character.

 


Make the most of your opportunities

اضاعة الفرصة غصة.

           از دست دادن فرصت ، موجب اندوه است .

To miss an opportunity brings about grief.

 

Follow frugality

ما عال من اقتصد.

آن که میانه روی کرد، تنگدست نشد.

He who practices moderation and frugality does not become destitute.

 

 Recognize people through their words

تکلموا تعرفوا فأن المرء مخبوء تحت لسانه.

سخن بگویید تا شناخته شوید، براستی آدمی در زیر زبان خود نهفته است.

Speak so that you may be known, since man is hidden under his tongue (sayings).

 

 Realize your worth

هلک امروء لم یعرف قدره.

آن که ارزش خود را نداند هلاک گردد.

He who does not know his worth is condemned to be ruined.

 

Make friends with others

التودد نصف العقل.

دوست داشتن نیمی از عقل است.

To win the friendship of people is half of wisdom.

 

Respond badness with goodness

عاتب أخاک بالأحسان الیه واردد شره بالأنعام علیه.

برادرت را با نیکویی به او سرزنش کن و بدی او را با هدیه دادن به اوپاسخ ده.

Admonish your brother (comrade) by good behavior towards him, and ward off his evil by forgiving him.

 

Consult others in your doings

من شاور الرجال شارکها فی عقولها.

آن که با مردم مشورت کرد، خود را در خرد آنان شریک ساخت.

One who consults other people shares in their understanding (reason).

 

Do not reveal your secret to the other

من کتم سره کانت الخیرة بیده.

آن که راز خویش را پنهان گذارد، اختیار کار را در دست خود قرار داد.

One who guards his secrets has complete control over his affairs.

 


Keep liberality

آلة الریاسة سعة الصدر.

فراخ سینگی ابزار سروری و بزرگی است.

The means to secure high authority is breadth of chest (liberality, generosity).

 

Keep away from the seditions

لا مرحبا بوجوه لا تری الا عند کل سوأة.

خوش مباد چهره هایی که جز در هنگام بدی و زشتی دیده نمی شوند.

Woe to the faces that who are not seen but on foul occasions.

 

Be patient!

اول عوض الحلیم من حلمه ان الناس انصاره علی الجاهل.

نخستین پاداش صبور از صبرش آن است که مردم در برابر نادان یار او گردند.

The first reward the exerciser of forbearance gets is that people become his helpers against the ignorant.

 

Do not dispute

الخلاف یهدم الرأی.

جدل، تدبیر را از بین می برد.

Disputation removes good management.

 

Recognize people when occasions change.

فی تقلب الاحوال علم جواهر الرجال.

در دگرگونی اوضاع زمانه، می توان افراد را شناخت.

Through change of circumstances the mettle of men is known.

 

Have modesty!

من کساه الحیاء ثوبه لم یرالناس عیبه.

آن که لباس حیا پوشد، کسی عیب او را نبیند.

Whomever modesty cloths with dress, people would not see his defects.

 


Keep silent!

بکثرة الصمت تکون الهیبه.

با خاموشی بسیار وقار پدیدار گردد.

Excess of silence will bring respect and dignity.

 

 Do not commit treachery!

من ظن بک خیرا فصدق ظنه.

آن که به تو گمان نیک برد، (با درستکاری )گمان وی را راست دار.

If a person has a good idea about you, make his idea true [with honesty].

 

 Keep away from envy!

صحة الجسد من قلة الحسد.

حسد چون کم بود، تن سالم بود.

Health of the body comes from paucity of envy.

 

 Keep moderate in friendship and enemity

احبب حبیبک هونا ما عسی ان یکون بغیضک یوماً ما و ابغض بغیضک هونا ما عسی ان یکون حبیبک یوما ما.

دوستت را چندان دوست مدار، شاید روزی دشمنت گردد و نسبت به دشمنت چندان کینه ورزی مکن که شاید روزی دوستت گردد.

Have love for your friend to a limit, for it is possible that he may turn into your enemy some day; and hate your enemy up to a limit, for it is possible that he may turn into your friend some day.

 

Do not keep company with the stupid!

لا تصحب المائق، فانه یزین لک فعله و یود ان تکون مثله.

همنشین بی خرد مباش که او کار خود را برای تو آراید و دوست دارد که تو نیز چون او باشی.

Do not associate with a fool because he will beautify his actions before you and likes that you too be like him.

 

Ask for knowing

سل تفقها و لا تسأل تعنتا.

برای دانستن بپرس نه برای آزار دادن.

Ask me for understanding but do not ask me for getting confusion.

 


Abstain from guilt even in private

اتقوا معاصی الله فی الخلوات فأن الشاهد هو الحاکم.

از نافرمانی خداوند حتی در نهان، بپرهیز! زیرا آن که بیننده است، داوری کننده نیز است.

Beware of disobeying Allah in solitude because the witness (of that situation) is also the judge.


 

Do not commit an error so that not to have to excuse

الاستغناء عن العذر اعز من الصدق به.

بی نیاز از عذر بودن ارزشمندتر است تا از روی راستی عذر آوردن.

Not to be in need of putting forth an excuse is better than putting forth a true excuse.


 Thank God for His blessings by obeying Him

اقل ما یلزمکم الله ان لا تستعینوا بنعمه علی معاصیه.

کمترین حقی که از خداوند بر گردن شماست آن است که از نعمتهایش در راه انجام گناه یاری نگیرید.

The least right of Allah on you is that you should not make use of His favors in committing His sins.

 

 Do regard as small no sin

اشد الذنوب ما استهان به صاحبه.

سخت ترین گناهان آن بود که گناهکار آن را خوار شمرد.

The most serious sin is that which the doer considers light.


Do not say whatever you know

لا تقل ما لا تعلم بل لا تقل کل ما تعلم.

آن چه را که نمی دانی مگو بلکه هرچه را هم که می دانی نگو.

Do not say what you do not know; rather do not say whatever you know, too.


 Do respect your parents and teacher

لا تجعلن ذرب لسانک علی من انطقک.

با آن کس که تو را سخن گفتن آموخت به تندی سخن مگو.

Do not try the sharpness of your tongue against Him who gave you the power to speak, or the eloquence of your speaking against him who set you on the right path.

 

Do good, however small it is

افعلوا الخیر و لا تحقروا منه شیئا.

کار نیک را انجام دهید و چیزی از آن را کوچک مشمارید.

Do good and do not regard any part of it small, because its small is big and its little is much.


 Do not sleep a lot

ما انقض النوم لعزائم الیوم.

چه بسیار تصمیم های روز که خواب آنها را بر هم زد.

What a breaker is sleep for resolutions of the day.

 

 Do not pride yourself!

ما لابن آدم والفخر، اوله نطفه و آخره جیفه.

پسر آدم را با فخر کردن چه کار که آغازش نطفه و پایانش لاشه است.

What has a man to do with vanity! His origin is semen and his end is a carcass while he cannot feed himself nor ward off death.

 

 

Do not backbite the others!

الغیبة جهد العاجز.

پشت سر دیگران بد گویی کردن، سلاح فرد ناتوان است.

Backbiting is the tool of the helpless.


 

Get the advices of the time

ما اکثر العبر و اقل الاعتبار.

چه بسیار است پند و چه اندک است پند گرفتن.

How many are the objects of lessons but how few the taking of lessons.

 

 Avoid to be lazy

من اطاع التوانی ضیع الحقوق.

آن که اسیر سستی شد، حقوق را ضایع کرد.                                                              

One who is lazy and lethargic loses rights and dues.


 

 Do not follow the talebearer

من اطاع الواشی ضیع الصدیق.

آن که از سخن چین پیروی کرد، دوست را از دست داد.

He who believes in the backbiter loses his friend.


Do not be covetous!

الطامع فی وثاق الذل.

طمعکار گرفتار خواری است.

A greedy man is always captivated by disgrace.
